Winning the numbers game

The rules and norms of job searching have changed.

  • According to Career Builders, an average job posting will receive 1,000 applications.
  • Employers use on average 7-10 search criteria—keywords and phrases—and automated software programs to screen candidate applications and resumés for specific skills that match the job posting, department needs and/or culture.
  • On average, 15 seconds is spent scanning a resumé.
  • Human eyes will then review 20-25 resumés to interview 10-12 candidates by phone; only 2-4 of these screened candidates will experience in-person interviews.

A successful job search strategy matches your skills, interests, and values with the right career or job choice for you. To win the numbers game, you need to target employers that are more likely to have opportunities for someone with your interests and degree, and only apply for jobs that you are qualified for.
